Denotation and Connotation

Image result for water aid advert

In the advert, It shows a picture of a young boy who looks upset. The advert uses gloomy colours; this connotes sadness and dryness. This may also connote loss or death. This is effective because it shows that the atmosphere is gloomy without water which would convince people more to donate and help. The sadness of the boy will also bring attention to the viewers as the image shows that it's making young children suffer at such an early age. This is further backed up by the caption, "Dig toilets not graves", stating that people are dying because they are unable to access such simple human need. This will make the viewers empathise and have the urge to donate even more as they most likely live in a state where they are able to access water easily.
